DISCOVERY

THE CHALLENGE

The Pittsburgh community needs a way to feel comfortable about participating in medical research because there is a distrust of clinical trials that prevents them from taking part.

How might we:

  • … further clinical trial participation.
  • … simplify the clinical trial sign up experience.
  • … help participants overcome distrust in medical research.
  • … contribute to medical research and solutions.

ECOLOGY MODEL

Super curious worked with a team of Wondros design researchers who created a comprehensive ecology model including personas, user experience maps and a service blueprint for us to use as initial research.

Research team came up with 3 different persona types including researcher, coordinator and participant.

IMPLEMENTATION

WIREFRAMING: Low Fidelity

We sketched out many iterations before deciding on the final layout.

WIREFRAMING: High Fidelity

We created polished high fidelity wireframes and in depth documentation in order create alignment with the team and prepare for testing.

WIREFRAMING: Wireflow

We then created a polished wireflow and a clickable prototype to use for usability testing.

USABILITY TEST FINDINGS

During usability testing with 8 participants we focused questions around easy of clinical trial sign up and user’s trust of website.

In order to communicate findings a report with 12 key insights from these findings was created.

Some key findings:

  1. Every user felt comfortable sharing the information requested. Most mentioned specifically it was because of the affiliation with the University of Pittsburgh.
  2. Users didn’t expect so see a guided search but said it was “more useful.”
  3. Search criteria for conditions and relevant questions may be confusing.
  4. Users do not have a clear idea of the Pitt+Me works process.

One of the main challenges was that there was not enough information about the process after someone signs up for a trial.

VISUAL DESIGN

STYLE GUIDE

In order to keep design consistency, we created a style guide consistent with the print marketing campaigns.

THE RESULTS

A visual design that tells the story of the Pittsburgh community while hand-holding its users through a simple clinical trial sign up website.

Pitt + Me is currently live with over 100K active users.
